Pads must maintain adequate friction for good stopping power within the temperatures that will be achieved on the track. Overall wear must also be considered. For most asphalt and road course racing applications, high temperature compounds, above 1000°F (538°C), are usually required. On dirt tracks, drag racing, and high-performance street vehicles, temperatures typically range from 500°F to 1000°F (260°C to 538°C). Please note that these are general ranges, not absolute values. Many unforeseen factors and influences can affect brake temperature. The best indicator for pad selection will always be track performance. If friction loss (pad fade) occurs due to overheating, improved cooling, a heavier disc, or pads with a higher temperature range may be necessary.
