The temperature range and overall friction value are the primary considerations for pad selection. Pads must maintain the appropriate amount of friction for braking power within the temperatures to be achieved on the track. The overall wear rate should also be considered. For most asphalt and road racing applications, high-temperature compounds, exceeding 1000° F, are generally required. Dirt track, drag racing, and high-performance street applications typically operate at temperatures between 500° F and 1000° F. Please note that these are general ranges and not absolute values. Many unforeseen factors and influences can affect brake temperatures. The best indicator for pad selection will always be on-track performance. If friction loss (pad fade) occurs due to overheating, improved cooling, a heavier rotor, or pads with a higher temperature range may be required.
