Temperature range and overall friction value are the primary considerations for pad selection. Pads must maintain the appropriate amount of friction for optimal braking power within the temperatures that will be reached on the track. Overall wear should also be considered. For most asphalt and road course applications, compounds with a temperature range exceeding 1000° F (538° C) are generally required. Dirt track, drag racing, and high-performance street applications generally operate in the 500° F to 1000° F (260° C to 538° C) range. Please note these are general ranges, not absolutes. Many factors and unforeseen influences can affect brake temperatures. The best indicator for pad selection will always be on-track performance. If friction loss (pad fade) due to overheating occurs, better cooling, a heavier rotor, or pads with a higher temperature range may be required.
