The temperature range and overall friction value are the main considerations for pad selection. Pads must maintain the appropriate amount of friction for optimal braking power within the temperatures to be achieved on the track. Overall wear should also be considered. For most asphalt and road racing applications, high-temperature compounds, exceeding 1000 °F, are usually necessary. Dirt track, drag racing, and street car applications typically operate at temperatures between 500 °F and 1000 °F. Note that these are general ranges and not absolute values. Many factors and unforeseen influences can affect brake temperatures. The best indicator for pad selection will always be on-track performance. If pad fade occurs due to overheating, improved cooling, a heavier disc, or pads with a higher temperature range may be required.
