Temperature range and overall friction value are the primary considerations for pad selection. Pads must maintain adequate friction for good stopping power within the temperatures that will be reached on the track. Overall wear should also be considered. Most asphalt and road course applications typically require high-temperature compounds, in excess of 1000°F (538°C). Dirt track, drag racing, and street performance applications typically operate at temperatures between 500°F (260°C) and 1000°F (538°C). Please note that these are general ranges, not absolute values. Many factors and unforeseen influences can affect brake temperatures. The best indicator for pad selection will always be on-track performance. If friction loss (pad fade) from overheating occurs, cooling may need to be improved, a heavier rotor used, or pads with a higher temperature range selected.
