The temperature range and overall friction value are the primary considerations for pad selection. Pads must maintain adequate friction for good stopping power within the temperatures they will encounter on the track. Overall wear must also be considered. For most asphalt and road course applications, high-temperature compounds, in excess of 1000° F (538° C), are generally required. Dirt track applications, drag racing, and street vehicles typically operate at temperatures between 500° F and 1000° F (260° C and 538° C). Note that these are general ranges, not absolutes. Many unforeseen factors and influences can affect brake temperatures. The best indicator for pad selection will always be on-track performance. If a loss of friction (pad fade) occurs due to overheating, it may be necessary to improve cooling, use a heavier disc, or a pad with a higher temperature range.
