Temperature range and overall friction value are the primary considerations for pad selection. Pads must maintain adequate friction for braking power within the temperatures that will be reached on the track. Overall wear should also be considered. For most asphalt and road racing applications, compounds in the high-temperature range, above 1000°F (538°C), are generally required. Applications for dirt tracks, drag racing, and high-performance road vehicles typically operate at temperatures between 500° and 1000°F. Please note that these are general ranges and not absolute values. Many factors and unforeseen influences can affect brake temperature. The best indicator for pad selection will always be on-track performance. If pad fade (loss of friction) occurs due to overheating, it may be necessary to improve cooling, use a heavier disc, or pads with a higher temperature range.
