The temperature range and overall friction value are the primary considerations for pad selection. Pads must maintain adequate friction for good braking power within the temperatures that will be encountered on the track. Overall wear should also be considered. For most asphalt and road race applications, compounds in the high-temperature range, above 1000°F, are generally required. Dirt track, drag racing, and high-performance street applications typically operate at temperatures between 500° and 1000°F. Please note that these are general ranges and not absolute values. Many factors and unforeseen influences can affect brake temperatures. The best indicator for pad selection will always be track performance. If friction loss (pad fade) due to overheating occurs, improved cooling, a heavier rotor, or pads with a higher temperature range may be necessary.
