Furthermore, closed systems prevent unwanted oil vapors from entering the cabin. Dipsticks integrated into the cans allow for easy inspection of accumulated fluid. Beginning in 2004, with the Gen IV LS engines, General Motors replaced the PCV valve with a fixed 2.5mm orifice. This move was made, presumably, to save production costs and eliminate a part that required servicing. NOTE: The PCV valve serves several functions in the crankcase: promoting negative pressure, and preventing over-pressurization. Also, in the event of a backfire, the PCV valve prevents flammable vapors from igniting in the crankcase.
