ATHENA Multi-Layer Steel (MLS) Gasket
Material
ATHENA MLS gaskets feature a combination of 3 to 5 layers made from different types of raw materials.
The combination of outer and inner layers is designed to offer superior standard compression performance, and the type of steel used may vary depending on engine requirements.
Athena MLS gaskets provide a uniform torque load across the entire sealing surface to compensate for any cylinder deformation.
The Athena MLS gasket is the ideal solution for both aluminum cylinder heads with cast iron blocks and aluminum cylinder heads with aluminum blocks.
Manufacturing Process
Newly designed Athena MLS cylinder head gaskets are manufactured from high-quality, high-hardness 301 stainless steel.
Each layer is individually formed using state-of-the-art laser cutting and embossed with an optimized forming process.
Two layers of the cylinder head gasket undergo a stress-relief process to significantly reduce the stress induced by embossing.
After the stress-relief process, a patented two-component polymeric coating is applied, ensuring uniform coverage of the outer layers, without interruptions in the coating. This process ensures micro-sealing of engine coolant and oil fluids.
Athena MLS gaskets are tested and analyzed on engine test benches and in endurance tests.
Gas Stopper Technology
Gas Stopper technology is a key factor in the design of competition MLS cylinder head gaskets. The stainless steel stopper layer incorporates an innovative active folding system that provides a high-pressure seal around the cylinder bore when the cylinder head is tightened. The gas stopper is located around the combustion chamber, allowing for a tighter fit between the cylinder head and the engine block, preventing gas leaks.
This also prevents component deformation due to faster temperature equalization. Benefits

Patented Coating Technology
Our two-component polymer coating is applied after the stress-relief process and ensures uniform coverage of the outer layers, without interruptions in the coating. This process ensures micro-sealing of coolant/engine oil fluids and meets the demands of various harsh environments.
The first layer is a high-temperature compound that adapts to surface irregularities of the engine block and cylinder head. (Typical MLS cylinder head gaskets require a 30 Ra surface finish, while Athena's seal surface finishes up to 60 Ra).
The second layer is easily removable and does not adhere to contact surfaces when disassembling the engine.
