If you drive an MQB all-wheel drive vehicle, it uses the Haldex system. This is a clever coupling system that allows the rear wheel drive to engage only when needed, as the front wheels lose traction.

Haldex oil is very specific and encourages friction between the multi-plate clutch faces. Inevitably, this wear between the plates causes small particles to slowly accumulate as sludge in the oil.

This sludge builds up around the pump oil filter, which gradually prevents the Haldex system from functioning properly. Many owners have experienced their all-wheel drive vehicle slowly becoming front-wheel drive as this filter becomes clogged.
