One-piece fuel cell foam, Radium Engineering

FiA-mandated fuel cell foam is used as both an explosion suppressor and a slosh baffle. This reticulated foam is made from polyurethane and meets MIL-DTL-83054C Type II specifications. With 15 pores per inch (nominal), it displaces only 0.07 gallons (or 9 fl oz) of fuel per foam piece.

After each race season, inspect the condition of the fuel cell foam and replace it at least every 3 seasons. While designed for increased durability with hydrocarbon fuels, Radium has also performed extensive testing with high alcohol content fuels (ethanol and methanol). These tests have shown no signs of foam deterioration. However, more frequent inspections are recommended, as alcohol could shorten its lifespan. NOTE: All Radium Engineering fuel cells come pre-assembled with this same foam. ADVANTAGES: Limits fuel aeration to protect against fuel starvation, ensuring consistent supply to the pickup unit. Minimizes weight transfer during cornering, acceleration, and braking. Displaces fuel vapors, reducing explosion risk.
