on the market today. ARP uses only premium grade 8740 alloy and a proprietary ARP2000 alloy, far superior to aircraft quality alloy steels. In addition, each stud is placed vertically
in special fixtures and heat-treated to a precise 190,000 psi for 8740 material and 220,000 psi for ARP2000 material. This procedure ensures complete heat penetration and the results are far superior to those lesser quality studs from other manufacturers who just dump pieces in a basket and hope for the best. Of note, lesser quality studs aren’t even centerless ground; the material is roll threaded (usually prior to heat-treat, when the material is easier to machine). Because ARP studs are manufactured to such exacting tolerances, you’ll note that gaskets and cylinder heads literally slide right into position and are perfectly aligned—something that won’t happen with inferior head studs.
Using studs makes it a lot easier to assemble an engine (especially a competition engine that has to be torn down frequently for service) as the cylinder head and gasket will be positively aligned.

Studs also provide more accurate and consistent torque loading. Here’s why: When you use bolts to secure the head, the fastener is actually “twisted” while it is being torqued. Accordingly, the bolt is reacting to two different forces simultaneously. A stud should be installed in a “relaxed” mode—never crank it in tightly using a jam nut. If everything is correct, the stud should be installed by hand. Then, when the nut is torqued, the stud will stretch
only in the vertical access. Remember, a shorter stud with a shoulder will have a similar stretch rate to a longer standard shank stud. This provides a more even clamping force on the head.
