in special fixtures and heat-treated to a precise 190,000 psi for 8740 material and 220,000 psi for ARP2000 material. This procedure ensures complete heat penetration, and the results are far superior to the inferior studs from other manufacturers who simply dump parts in a basket and hope for the best. Importantly, inferior studs aren't even centerless ground; the material is threaded in bar form (usually before heat treat when the material is easier to machine). Because ARP studs are manufactured to such exacting tolerances, you'll note that gaskets and cylinder heads literally glide into place and are perfectly aligned—something that won't happen with inferior head studs.

The use of studs greatly facilitates cylinder head assembly (especially on a racing engine that requires frequent and rapid maintenance) because the cylinder head and gasket will be perfectly aligned.

Studs also provide more accurate and consistent torque loading. Here's why: When you use bolts to secure the cylinder head, the fastener is actually being twisted while you're torquing it to the proper specification. So, the bolt is reacting to two different forces simultaneously. A stud should be installed finger-tight; never over-tighten it using a jam nut. If all is correct, the stud should be installed by hand. Then, when torquing the nut, the stud will stretch
only in the vertical axis. Remember, a shorter stud with a relief will have a similar stretch rate to a longer standard shank stud. This provides more even clamping force on the head.
