Bratex Differential for Ford Focus ST170 / Mini Cooper S

Bratex helical limited slip differentials distribute torque between the wheels, concentrating more torque on the wheel with better traction, which improves performance and handling, especially in low-grip situations. The helical gear manages the distribution of friction within the differential. When torque is applied to the helical gear system, a force is created that pushes the gear against the differential housing, generating friction. The higher the torque, the greater the pushing force, directly proportional to the amount of torque. This allows the Bratex differential to manage a considerable traction imbalance, even under high power conditions, such as exiting a corner at high speed. However, under low torque conditions, the differential can differentiate quietly and smoothly, making it ideal for normal road driving. The Bratex differential uses the popular parallel-axis helical gear configuration, optimized for even load distribution. It is designed with a 5:1 torque bias ratio, meaning that if one wheel loses traction, the wheel with more grip can receive five times more torque than the spinning wheel. However, five times zero is still zero, so all these helical limited slip differentials work best when both wheels are on the ground and the spinning wheel still retains some traction. In practice, this is rarely an issue, as there is always some resistance in the spinning wheel; nevertheless, some drivers deftly use left-foot braking to partially lock the spinning wheel.
